Castello di Verduno Monvigliero Riserva 2017 (750ml)
Castello di Verduno Monvigliero Riserva 2017 (750ml)
Low stock: 5 left
The 2017 Barolo Riserva Monvigliero is a big, powerful wine. Huge tannins give the 2017 its imposing personality. Red fleshed fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper, rose petal and incense all lend notable freshness and verve. There's not much of the openness that defines so many wines in this vintage. That's probably a good thing for its long-term prospects. There is a touch of elevated volatile acidity that readers will have to accept to fully enjoy the 2017.

Castello di Verduno is one of many Piedmont estates that remain under the radar. Readers who enjoy classically built Barbarescos and Barolos will definitely want to check out these new releases. The Barbarescos and Barolos are fermented in either tank or wood (for the single-vineyard wines) and generally see 20-30 days on the skins, including a period of submerged cap maceration. Aging is 18-24 months in cask for the Barbarescos and 30-36 months for the Barolos.
