Lino Maga (Azienda Agricola Barbacarlo) is one of Italy's most revered natural wine estates, set on the steep slopes of Broni in Lombardy's Oltrepò Pavese. Established in 1886, the estate's legendary monopole vineyard Barbacarlo has been farmed without synthetic chemicals for over a century, producing unhurried, deeply characterful red wines that age gracefully for decades.

Barbacarlo 2021 is a historic field blend of Croatina, Uva Rara, and Ughetta/Vespolina from old vines on steep 30-70% clay-limestone slopes. Aged in historic oak and chestnut barrels and bottled raw without fining, filtering, or sulfur addition, the 2021 vintage highlights the cooler season's brilliant focus and energetic tension.

Tasting Profile: Luminous ruby-garnet hue. Intensely aromatic with sour cherries, wild red berries, crushed gravel, dried lavender, white pepper, and subtle leather notes. Taut, energetic, and precise on the palate, combining crunchy red fruit acidity, fine tactile tannins, and a bracingly dry, saline-mineral finish.

Decant 1 hour prior to serving at 16–18°C. Exceptional with roasted lamb chops, braised pork shoulder, charcuterie, truffle dishes, or aged hard cheeses.

Lino & Giuseppe Maga, Barbacarlo

Lino Maga was a legendary winemaker dedicated to protecting the hill of "Barbacarlo" in Oltrepò Pavese. His passing in 2021 marked the end of an era, but his son Giuseppe is committed to preserving Lino's legacy. The family winery, established in 1896, features old vines over eighty years old and spans 4 hectares of rugged tufa soil at 300 meters altitude. The unique soil, extending into Val Trebbia, combined with the microclimate, allows for long and slow fermentation each year, resulting in diverse vintages that tell a story in a bottle. Lino and Giuseppe aimed for Barbacarlo to be recognized as a grand cru site, emphasizing indigenous varieties like Croatina, Uva Rara, and Vespolina. Lino’s wines, crafted through natural fermentation and aged in traditional oak and chestnut vats, are renowned for their longevity and distinctive flavor profiles, making them appealing to wine enthusiasts. His belief that the land is our mother continues to inspire the future of Oltrepò Pavese.
