2023 Vaira Aurelj Barbera d'Alba – a perfect distillation of their ethos. Plush and generous, with a lift of acidity and just the right flicker of grip, it's a wine that asks only that you're present for it. Made without fining or filtration, it hums with dark fruit and the quiet clarity of high-altitude farming.

Sustainable Winemaking Philosophy
Hand-harvested grapes in small 20kg cases preserve berry integrity from vine to cellar. Unfiltered and unclarified with minimal SO₂ addition, this wine reflects the producer's commitment to natural, low-intervention methods that let the vineyard speak.

Artisanal Vinification
Multi-layer fermentation combines 40% whole bunch clusters with 60% whole berries, gently moved into tank without pumps to avoid bruising. Wild yeast fermentation with temperature control ensures complexity while respecting the fruit's natural character. Gentle pump-overs transition to punching down mid-fermentation for optimal extraction.

Patient Ageing
Nine months in exhausted Slavonian oak barrels add subtle structure without overpowering the vibrant fruit, followed by six months bottle ageing for integration and harmony.

Tasting Profile
Expect plush dark fruit with bright cherry and red berry notes, refreshing acidity, silky tannins with just the right grip, and an authentic unfiltered expression of Barbera's natural vibrancy. The high-altitude farming brings quiet clarity and precision to every sip. Perfect with pasta, grilled meats, or aged cheeses.

Vaira Aurelj, Vergne

Brothers Francesco and Giacomo are rewriting Barolo's rules at their Vergne estate. With biodynamic vineyards and minimalist winemaking, they craft wines that buzz with energy. Their "FZ" (Fuori Zona) Nebbiolo challenges expectations, while the rare Controcorrente – made from Nebbiolo rosé – is pure liquid rebellion. The 2020 Barolo Fossati (their first vintage!) already shows cult-worthy depth. For drinkers who crave authenticity with a twist, Vaira Aurelj delivers. Low-intervention, high-expression wines from Barolo's wild west.
