Controcorrente 2022 from Vaira Aurelj is an exceptional Piedmont red crafted from 100% Nebbiolo Rosé—a rare variety closely related to traditional Nebbiolo.

Vineyard
The vines, over 23 years old, thrive on calcareous clay soils that lend depth and minerality to the wine.

Winemaking
Hand-harvested grapes undergo partial crushing with stems intact, creating a distinctive flavor profile that evolves with each vintage. This intentional approach yields a mid-structured wine with vibrant notes of wild cherry, rosehip, and warm spice, framed by firm tannins and a long, crisp finish.

Philosophy
Controcorrente embodies the vision of two brothers who believe wine should be a direct expression of vineyard work. With no chemical intervention and a commitment to simple, honest transformation from grape to bottle, they produce wines of exceptional quality and authenticity.

Vaira Aurelj, Vergne

Brothers Francesco and Giacomo are rewriting Barolo's rules at their Vergne estate. With biodynamic vineyards and minimalist winemaking, they craft wines that buzz with energy. Their "FZ" (Fuori Zona) Nebbiolo challenges expectations, while the rare Controcorrente – made from Nebbiolo rosé – is pure liquid rebellion. The 2020 Barolo Fossati (their first vintage!) already shows cult-worthy depth. For drinkers who crave authenticity with a twist, Vaira Aurelj delivers. Low-intervention, high-expression wines from Barolo's wild west.
